During the cold and rainy off-season a man arrives in a seaside town and, giving his name only as Pierre, checks into the only hotel which remains open. His arrival arouses curiosity and a degree of suspicion, as people note that he appears to know the area, yet gives no explanation for his presence at that bleak time of year in the dead-end town.。圣洛伦索之夜乃流星划破天空、许愿者愿望成真之夜。一个女人回想起很久以前，一群农民为了逃脱纳粹，奔走在托斯卡尼的乡间，而天空划过的不是繁星，而是闪烁的炮火。影片展现在观众面前的是一个6岁孩子亲眼所见的一系列情景和人物：1944年8月10日夜晚，一个村镇必须在服从纳粹法西斯分子的暴力和逃到美军战区之间做出选择。由于所持道德观点、文化程度以及阶级的不同，村民中发生了分歧。一部分人决定和戛尔瓦诺一起逃走，另一部分则随主教去村中唯一的教堂避难。第二天，德军突然来到村庄，大肆进行搜捕，没有逃脱的人被枪杀，教堂也被炸毁，而和戛尔瓦诺一起逃走的人们，最终被美军解救。。
